A deliciously sweet, Kahlúa-style, chai liqueur made with rum, sugar, black tea, and chai spices that's perfect for cocktails and a Chai White Russian.

Chai liqueur is a sweetened black tea with chai spices and rum. It's inspired by Kahlúa, which is a sweet coffee liqueur. It's surprisingly way too easy to make! All it requires is boiling some tea with spices and you're ready to go. The best part is that it's completely customizable to your taste!

Use small batch homemade chai spice to flavor your tea to your liking

Ingredients

– 20 g green cardamom – 15 g black peppercorn – 15 g ground ginger – 15 g cinnamon – 5 g cloves – 2 g mace, optional – 1 g nutmeg – 1 g star anise, optional

Or use whole spices!

Lightly smash them in a mortar and pestle to release their oils before simmering them in water

Ingredients

– 4 cups water – 5 bags black tea – 3 cups granulated sugar – ½ cup light brown sugar – 5 cardamom pods – ¼ cinnamon stick – 8 cloves – ½ teaspoon black pepper – ¼ teaspoon ginger powder – 2 cups rum or vodka, see notes

infuse the water with spices

In a large pot, boil 4 cups of water. Add the tea bags, cardamom pods, cinnamon stick, cloves, black pepper, and ginger powder. Bring the water to a simmer for 20 minutes, stirring in intervals. Add the granulated sugar and light brown sugar and remove the pot off heat. Stir until the sugar has fully dissolved.

Allow the tea to cool. Add in the rum. Strain the liqueur into sanitized liquor bottles. Slap on a label and store.

Add milk or heavy cream to make a Chai White Russian!
