If you've been seeing orange chaat all over social media, it's having a moment for a good reason. Fruit chaat is a popular Indian street-style snack where fresh fruit is tossed with spices like chaat masala, chili powder, and citrus juice. This version is a bit simpler with just oranges.

Ingredients - Notes and Substitutions

- Oranges - Sweet, juicy oranges are the star of this recipe. Navel oranges are easy to find and work beautifully, but Cara Cara oranges are great for their sweeter flavor and gorgeous pink flesh. My favorite are Sumo citrus. Blood oranges and grapefruit are another delicious seasonal options.
- Honey - A drizzle of honey balances the tanginess of the citrus and spices. If your oranges are especially sweet, you can reduce the amount or omit it altogether. For a vegan version, substitute for agave nectar.
- Lemon Juice - Fresh lemon juice brightens the dressing and enhances the citrus flavor. For a sweeter version, use freshly squeezed orange juice instead.
- Chaat Masala - This tangy Indian spice blend is what gives orange chaat its signature flavor. Every brand tastes a little different, so start with less and add more to taste.
- Roasted Ground Cumin - Adds a warm, smoky earthiness that complements the sweet oranges. If you only have whole cumin seeds, toast them in a dry skillet and grind them before using.
- Kashmiri Chili Powder - Provides a vibrant red color and mild heat. Substitute paprika for less spice or cayenne pepper if you prefer a spicier chaat.
- Kala Namak (Black Salt) - Black salt adds the unmistakable savory, tangy flavor that's common in Indian chaats. If you don't have it, substitute regular kosher salt, although the flavor won't be quite the same.
- Red Chili Flakes - Adds little bursts of heat and texture. Adjust the amount depending on your spice preference or omit for a milder snack.
- Cilantro - Fresh cilantro adds a pop of freshness that ties everything together. If you're not a fan, fresh mint also works well.
